Traditional Byzantine Icons

My early development as an iconographer was influenced by Petro Cholodny, the Younger, a painter whose icons grace Ukrainian/Byzantine churches in North America and Europe. Under his tutelage I learned the egg tempera technique and orthodox precepts of iconography. The works depicted in this gallery are executed  using egg tempera and 18 carat gold leaf.

The process begins with building a panel. I use furniture quality birch plywood that is cut to size and prepared by making my own gesso. Made from hide skin glue and marble dust. It is applied if many thin coats and finely sanded in between.

The compositions are created within traditional guidelines. Having studied Byzantine cannons with church painter, I feel it is appropriate to adhere to existing prototypes.

Although these works are traditional and adhere to principles prescribed by church - they are entirely my own interpretation. These are not copies of famous icons from history books, but rather a synthesis of knowledge acquired over many years of study about icons and an original and fresh interpretation of a subject explored by the masters.

It is my hope to leave a legacy of traditional pieces imbued with an individual and recognizable character imbued with the deep reverence and spirituality required of an icon to move one to prayer.

Commissions are welcome. Please contact me to discuss your what you are interested in. There are many things to consider when commissioning an icon, special saints, feast days, occasions or a specific location. About commissions is some material I have prepared for people thinking about commissioning a piece.
